The Bricklayers and Allied Crafts Local No. 3 Apprentice Training Program admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin, religion or gender to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students in the apprenticeship program. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin, religion or gender in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs (if any), and other school-administered programs.
Our apprenticeship program is operated under the direction of a joint committee.
Union representatives, representatives from local contractors and consultants from the Division of Apprenticeship Standards and the Hayward Unified School District make up our committee.Apprentices are required to join the union in order to participate in our program.
Apprenticeship combines classroom instruction with on the job training.
A portion of the classroom instruction is hands on training.An apprentice who enters our program with no prior experience will earn 40% of the current journeyman rate.
They can expect to progress through our program with pay increases every six to seven months.
The length of each program varies Terrazzo Finishers - 2 years, Marble Finishers - 2 years and six months, Marble Masons, Terrazzo Mechanics and Pointer, Cleaner, Caulkers - 3 years, and Bricklayers - 4 years and eight months.
Once you complete one of our apprenticeship programs you will receive a certificate from the United States Department of Labor, the State of California Division of Apprenticeship Standards and also from the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers.
You will have established a foundation upon which to build a future.

Bricklayer

Bricklaying is one of the oldest and most highly respected crafts of the construction trades.
A bricklayer is a skilled craftsperson, who using their talents and training is able to properly position masonry units, to create efficient, beautiful buildings and other structures.The bricklayers role in the construction of buildings is normally, but not limited to, building walls.
The work must be coordinated with other trades to insure the buildings are completed on schedule.It is very rewarding for bricklayers to look back at projects they have been a part of throughout their careers.
Applicants Must be 18 years or older Must have High School Diploma or equivalent Able to lift 50 lbs. continuously Able to work on staging above the ground Have a valid drivers license Willing and able to attend school three to four weeks per year
An apprentice with no prior experience enters our program at a pay rate of 40% of the current journeyman rate. The apprentice must attend all scheduled classes and complete all assignments.
When the apprentice has been in our program for seven months and accrued 900 work hours and 76 school hours they will become eligible for a pay increase. This process continues for each increase.
They should complete our program in four years and eight months.
The bricklayers school is located at the Mason Development Center in Tracy.
PCC

PCC is probably the most diversified trade in the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union.
A Pointer or Tuckpointer replaces mortar between masonry units.
The Cleaner aspect is the cleaning of all masonry surfaces.
A Caulker applies sealants to expansion joints in new and old buildings.A PCC does much more besides pointing, cleaning and caulking including, but not limited to Epoxy Injection and Mortar Patching.
A PCC craftsworker has the opportunity to restore old masonry buildings that have existed for decades.
Our craftworkers also work on new buildings that will some day be restored decades later by future PCC Craftworkers.
Applicants Must be 18 years or older Must have High School Diploma or equivalent No fear of heights -- able to work on swinging Scaffold
up to 40 stories high (up to 500 ft. above the ground)Have a valid drivers license Willing and able to attend school three to four weeks per year
An apprentice with no prior experience enters our program at a pay rate of 40% of the current journeyman rate. The apprentice must attend all scheduled classes and complete all assignments.
When the apprentice has been in our program for six months and accrued 750 work hours and 54 school hours they will become eligible for a pay increase. This process continues for each increase.
They should complete our program in three years.
The PCC school is located at the Mason Development Center in Tracy.
Marble Finisher

Marble finishers perform a variety of tasks which assist the Marble Mason.
Their duties include grinding and polishing marble and cleaning installed marble surfaces.
They also mix mortar, plaster and grout.
Finishers repair chipped, cracked or broken marble pieces and may also erect scaffolds.
Applicants Must be 18 years or older Must have High School Diploma or equivalent No fear of heights Have a valid drivers license Willing and able to attend school three weeks per year
An apprentice with no prior experience enters our program at a pay rate of 50% of the current journeyman rate. The apprentice must attend all scheduled classes and complete all assignments.

The marble finisher school is located at the Mason Development Center in Tracy.
Marble Mason

Marble Mason apprentices receive training which will enable
them to create impressive structures.Marble Masons perform various work processes including
cutting, tooling and setting marble slabs in floors and walls of buildings.They also trim, polish and cut marble to specified sizes.
Applicants Must be 18 years or older Must have High School Diploma or equivalent No fear of heights Have a valid drivers license Willing and able to attend school three to four weeks per year
Once an apprentice completes our Marble Finisher program they may become eligible to enter our Marble Mason program at a pay rate of 70% of the current journeyman rate. The apprentice must attend all scheduled classes and complete all assignments.
When the apprentice has been in our program for six months and accrued 750 work hours and 54 school hours they will become eligible for a pay increase. This process continues for each increase.
They should complete our program in three years.
The Marble Mason school is located at the Mason Development Center in Tracy.
Terrazzo Finisher
Terrazzo Finishers are employed by Terrazzo Contractors to assist Terrazzo Mechanics, their tasks include; mix mortar, chips, and aggregates, clean finished surfaces, stock materials, and perform other duties on new and remodeled construction. Work is physically strenuous.
The terrazzo finisher is an integral part of the terrazzo industry, and a prerequisite for advancement to Terrazzo Mechanic.
Applicants: Must be 18 years or older Have valid drivers license Able to perform the usual physical requirements of the trade. Willing and able to attend school two weeks per year.
An apprentice with no prior experience enters our program at a pay rate of 40% of the current journeyman rate. The apprentice must attend all scheduled classes and complete all assignments.
When the apprentice has been in our program for six months and accrued 700 work hours and 40 school hours they will become eligible for a pay increase. This process continues for each increase.
They should complete the program in two years (2800 hours on-the-job training)
The Terrazzo Finisher school is located at the Mason Development Center in Tracy.
Terrazzo Mechanic
Terrazzo Mechanics install terrazzo floors, medallions, countertops, steps, etc., according to blueprints or other instructions. They are responsible for layout and installation of, floating beds, divider strips, pattern designs etc. Other duties include pouring, rolling, grinding, polishing and repair of terrazzo.
Terrazzo's life cycle costs makes it the desirable choice for high traffic areas such as universities, hospitals, airports and sports venues.
Applicants Must be 18 years or older Able to perform the usual physical requirements of the trade Have a valid drivers license Willing and able to attend school three to four weeks per year.
An apprentice, with terrazzo Finisher experience, enters our program at a pay rate of 56% of the current journeyman rate. The apprentice must attend all scheduled classes and complete all assignments.
When the apprentice has been in our program for seven months and accrued 900 work hours and 80 school hours they will become eligible for an increase. This process continues for each increase.
They should complete our program in three years (4500 on-the-job hours).
The Terrazzo Mechanic school is located at the Mason Development Center in Tracy.
Applications
We take applications each weekday between the hours of 8:30 am. and 11:30 am. at the Apprentice Office. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
